Monday I had the pleasure of attending a tasting of twenty of Stéphane Tissots wines.
Tissot is a winemaker from the quite obscure district of Jura, France, best known for it's Vin Jaune (Yellow Wine).
After a taste of his Crémant, a decent if not great sparkling wine, we had the pleasure of tasting seven of his Chardonnays, ranging from the brilliant ARBOIS Chardonnay " Le Clos de la Tour de Curon ", 2004 to the less exiting ARBOIS Chardonnay Classique, 2005.
After the seven chardonnays we tasted three red, ARBOIS Poulsard " Les Bruyères " sans soufre, 2005 being the most interesting of the three in it's odd character and sulfur free incarnation.
Then we moved on to two interesting white vines Stéphane used to close in on the unique flavors of the three Vin Jaunes that were up next. The first was not oxidized, the other was thus bringing it closer to the sherry flavours one finds in Vin Jaune.
The three Vin Jaunes were the 99, the 98 and the 85 vintages. Interesting and unique wines.
At last we tasted four of his sweet wines, one unique red, two more conventional whites including Spirale 2003. The last one was a very sweet (480g/l I think), low alcohol (6%) wine that he makes very little of. Interesting wine indeed, but oh so very unavailable.
